Family whale watching holiday
You'll visit three coasts during this Sri Lanka holiday. Along the way you'll visit the royal cities, make a jeep safari in a game reserve with a chance of a leopard,visit the main cultural highlights in the program and also the beautiful tea plantations. This holiday is to be done all year round, but the June-October is the best time. You will have optimal enjoyment of the beautiful beaches on the east coast and can even spot whales.
Departure to Sri Lanka. If we book your tickets we ensure that you have a pleasant flight connection, so you don't be tired on arrival. You may also simply book yourself a ticket if you like to search the internet.
Day 2 Airport- Chilaw
Arrival and lovely welcome at the airport by your English speaking driver / guide. We drive directly towards the north and pass the busy Negombo. During your ride towards the Kalpitiya peninsula in Sri Lanka, there is already enough to see in the small towns we pass. You will find that the friendly locals often have the most beautiful smile.You sleep in Chilaw at the edge of the peninsula.
Day 3 Chilaw
A relaxing day at your resort to land in peace in Sri Lanka. You make a boat ride on the lagoon to visit a small fishing village during the day. You also have plenty of time to relax.
Day 4 Chilaw - Wilpattu - Anuradhapura
We leave early to Wilpattu national park where you go on a jeep safari. The Wilpattu park is one of the biggest parks of Sri Lanka and there are many animal species here. It is also one of the parks on the island where it is possible to take you to the first of the three royal cities that you visit; Anuradhapura. If we still have time, just take a dip in the pool . In the afternoon you climb the sacred rock Mihintale with a huge Buddha statue on top.
Day 5 Anuradhapura
A whole day to visit the various archaeological excavations and temples and the sacred Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura in peace. Together with your driver you visit the most interesting places in Anuradhapura. There is often a ceremony in progression or people sit to meditate in the temples. Between the temples monkeys walk around to take your food. Sri Lankan ladies love to keep the holy ground around the temples clean.
Day 6 Anuradhapura - Nilaveli
Today you transfer to the East Coast. Trincomalee has an impressive Dutch star fort. A colorful Hindu temple is located at the edge of a rock in the fort by the sea. North of Trincomalee are the beaches of Nilaveli. When the sea calm and the beaches are long stretched in the period June-October, it is inspiring for diving and snorkeling. Also the sea invites you to watch whales during a whale-watching excursion..
Day 7 Nilavelli
A relaxing beach day in Nilaveli. At Pigeon Island you can snorkel beautifully.
Day 8 Nilaveli - Giritale
Transfer to Giritale Situated by a big lake, while this is one of the largest and the older tanks (artificial lakes) in Sri Lanka. Water tanks often attract the elephants in the dry period. We visit the second royal city of Polonnaruwa and the stunning antiquities. Here lie the huge rock-cut Buddha images in the nature itself! It is evident that you see a different time period here than in Anuradhapura. After another hour's drive we arrive in the hotel in Sigiriya. It is near to the rock that you are going to climb tomorrow.
Day 9 Giritale - Sigiriya - Kandy
We climb in the morning the Lion Rock Sigiriya on the way to Kandy. Here King Kasyapa lived earlier in a castle on the rock. He overlooked the beautifully landscaped gardens with ponds and pools; It is called the Versailles of Asia. Halfway through the climb to the top you come across the frescoes in a cave,dating from the 5th century. The most exciting part of the climb is yet to begin and is running between two huge lion paws. Halfway to Kandy are the spice gardens where you will learn all about the spices and herbs that grow in Sri Lanka. In the afternoon we arrive in Kandy, the last kingdom city in Sri Lanka.
Day 10 Kandy - Pinnawela - Kandy
An hour's drive from Kandy is the famous elephant orphanage in Pinnawela. We visit it in the morning. Do not forget your camera.Bathing and playing of the elephants in the river is an unforgettable experience. In the course of the afternoon we are back in Kandy and let us introduce you to the highlights of Kandy during a city tour. Of course we visit the special ceremony that takes place every evening in the most famous temple of the country, the Temple of the Tooth. The temple is located right next to the huge city lake in the city center.
Day 11 Kandy - Nuwara Eliya
Today you continue further to the mountains of Sri Lanka, on the way to the region with the tea plantations. Soon the landscape changes and you see only tea plantations. We stop to visit a tea factory on one of the plantations and get explanation on the process of making tea. Most also have a shop where you can buy the most delicious teas. Nuwara Eliya, our destination for today, is the center of the tea trade. This place was used during the English colonial times to escape the warm summers. The wealthier British built their country houses. You sleep near the center in an old colonial house.
Day 12 Train ride Nanu Oya - Ella
Often from Nuwara Eliya to Ella the train ride is reckoned by our guests as one of the highlights.You drive through tea plantations, over wooden bridges, through tunnels, passing waterfalls and deserted railway stations. Often halfway a train engine becomes adhered to or disconnected Sometimes our train is waiting til another train from the opposite direction comes to the station.This is the opportunity to go and talk with the friendly locals or sing together and make music. A train journey in Sri Lanka is never boring. Your hotel has a pool with a view .... what amazing!
Day 13 Ella - Mirissa
We leave the mountains today and ride through to the south until we see the ocean image. Via the salterns in Hambantota and the Dutch fort in Matara we ride further to Mirissa. All what you think about a tropical bay becomes a reality here: Yellow sand, waves, pal trees until the beach and wooden huts to eat by the sea. Here it is a fine place to stay for the whole family.
Day 14 Mirissa
Day to relax for the whole family in the South coast.
Day 15 Mirissa - Colombo
Today you visit Galle where we visit the large Dutch star fort with the entrance decorated with the Dutch inscription and emblem and also with nice,narrow streets.You can stroll along the Herenstraat (a Dutch street name). We follow our holiday along the West coast. We will visit the Tsunami Photo Museum in Telwatta with drawings of village children about how they have experienced the tsunami and photographs from the period shortly after the devastating wave struck.We finish with sightseeing in the capital Colombo where you stay right on the promenade, in a luxury hotel.
Day 16 Colombo - Airport
Transfer to the airport while unforunately your vacation is almost over.
