Day 2 Airport - Mount Lavinia
After you are warmly welcomed at the airport you ride to Mount Lavinia. This is a suburb of Colombo, south of the city. Along the way you'll pass through Colombo and we let you immediately see the highlights of the city. You will notice that it is a busy Asian city with hustle and bustle .In recent years the old colonial buildings have become more glamorous to recover its former glory. Colombo also has some special temples. In Mount Lavinia we will stay in an old governor's house which is now a hotel. You look fom here over the skyline of Colombo.
Day 3 Mount Lavinia - Galle
The first part of the today we go by car with the bikes in the back. In Telwatta, a small village north of Hikkaduwa, you visit the Tsunami Photo Museum, a beautiful European initiative. From here you cycle the last stretch to Hikkaduwa. Your driver awaits you at the restaurant at lunch. Then you cycle the last 18 km tor Galle and meet the driver again at the gate of the Dutch star fort. You are not only exploring the fort but also stay there one night inside the walls.
Day 4 Galle - Tangalla
Today also the bikes will first go behind during the first part. The route runs mostly right along the ocean towards the south-east. In Tangalla we stop to see The Hummanaya Blowhole. Here the ocean pushes the water up to about 20 meters into the air. Just after Tangalla we take the last part on the bicycle again. Once we have finished riding on the busy road, you take on your bike to Kalamitiya, a small town by the sea. You'll spend two nights here at a beautiful, long beach.,
Day 5 Tangalla
You stay today also in a small scale resort directly next to the sea. Also, if you want, you can discover your surroundings and cycle to Tangalle and the nearby Ranna. Between these two places we find a government project where you can see many sorts of agricultural farmlands and cultures.
Day 6 Tangalla - Nuwara Eliya
The first part of today's journey has still areas where you can cycle easily. It is however best if the bikes stay in the car today. Soon we climb uphill tor Ella. In this town, especially known among backpackers, you have your lunch. Then we drive further into the mountains to Nuwara Eliya. At some point it seems as if you are seeing only tea plantations. English governors and rich tea plantation owners in Colombo previously used this mountain village to escape the hot summers in the coast. Their influence is still visible today. You surely imagine yourself being in England when you see the red post office. In the evening it can be fresher due to the high position. So take a (thick) sweater on your holiday?
Day 7 Nuwara Eliya
We take you to the upper Horton Plains. You will be brought there by jeep or minivan and you make a long walk across the plateau. The trail leads to World's End. Here, the mountain suddenly looks 800 meters down. The best view you have if you leave early. Before dawn you leave from Nuwara Eliya to be on the plateau on time. The approximately three-hour trail also passes Baker's Falls, a beautiful waterfall. Once back at the hotel you can ride a bike around the lake or cycle to the center of Nuwara Eliya.
Day 8 Nuwara Eliya - Kandy
Today it is mostly downhill journey to Kandy. You bike to the Gampola town. Then you have already made a stop at a tea factory on a plantation, where you here also come across the driver. In Gampola the bike is back again in the car (unless you want to cycle to Kandy) and we drive you around the city. You'll spend the next few days in a luxury homestay, an old colonial bungalow. It is a place where guests of Singha holidays happily stay during their Sri Lanka holiday!
Day 9 Kandy
An hour's drive from Kandy is the famous elephant orphanage Pinnawela. Here around 70 elephants live in the shelter that the orphanage offers them. It is a beautiful sight to see the bathing of the elephants in the adjacent river. The rest of the day visit the highlights of the Kandy itself. First we go to the botanical garden and in the afternoon visit the ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth. Stay again in your cozy home stay.
You go this morning with the owner of the homestay off to the local market. With the vegetables bought you make a traditional rice and curry lunch with him and his wife. In the afternoon you go probably cycling exploring the surroundings. Enjoy the long warm evenings and have a drink on the back porch of the house. Tomorrow we travel further into the green interior flatland of Sri Lanka.
Day 11 Kandy - Giritale
If you like you can a ride a part today with the bike. We all want not be late arriving at Sigiriya because then you have a chance that it becomes dark when coming down from the rock. After you visit Dambulla rock temple we proceed to Sigiriya. This is a opportunity where you can cycle. When you climb Sigiriya Lion rock you have a beautiful view from atop. If time permits, you might be having time to ride the last part on bikes. That should certainly not be in the dark because in this part elephants can cross the road in the evenings.
Day 12 Giritale - Polonnaruwa - Polonnaruwa
You bike today to the ancient royal city of Polonnaruwa. Here you are visiting the various sites scattered around the old town. You visit the old library, the old royal palace and various temples and rock-hewn Buddha statues. All site are explored by bike! You only have to watch out for crossing monkeys ..
Day 13 Giritale - Waikal
In the early morning you go on a jeep safari into the National Park Mineriya. In August and September, you've got the big chance to see many elephants and sometimes you will find huge herds on the edge of the lake. Outside those months, a visit to the wildlife park is yet worthwhile. We then drive you back to the coast and you stay another day at the beach.
Day 14 Waikal
Today you are in Waikkal. Today also your cycles are always at disposal. The lively Negombo is at cycling distance from your hotel. But perhaps you want to just relax in your hotel.Stay in Waikkal.
Day 15 Waikal - Airport
The chauffeur will come to pick you up from the hotel and brings you to the airport for your return flight to Europe.
We also have a cheap, 18 day cycle tour for you! Bicyle holiday in Sri Lanka.
You stay in middle-class hotels and the route is then from the North to the South !
